One of the most important money lessons a young child can learn is the difference between a need and a want, and this activity makes it fun!
Children cut out the six picture cards at the bottom of the page, then sort them into the correct box: NEEDS (things we must have to live) or WANTS (things we would like but do not need). It is a hands-on, scissors-and-glue activity that builds critical thinking and early financial decision-making skills.
Perfect for ages 3 to 8. Younger children can sort with a parent's guidance, while older children can work independently and explain their reasoning.
How to use this activity:
  1. Print the sheet at home on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
  2. Help your child cut out the six picture cards along the dashed lines.
  3. Ask: "Does this belong in NEEDS or WANTS?" and let them decide.
  4. Glue or tape each card into the correct box.
  5. Talk about why each item is a need or a want — there is no wrong conversation!
What your child will learn:
  • The difference between needs (food, water, shelter, clothing) and wants (toys, games, extras)
  • How to make thoughtful spending decisions
  • That money choices start with asking one simple question: "Do I need this or do I want this?"
This activity sheet is a great companion for all of our financial literacy books and is perfect for bringing the lessons to life at home.
